Study of Showcases: On Tales and Territory

Fundación ENAIRE Residency Award

Study of Showcases: On tales and territory I, II & III, Fundación Enaire Residency Prizes, Photo España at Instituto Cervantes, Madrid, Jun - Aug. 2018.

During the residency program organized by Fundación Enaire and Felipa Manuela, in Madrid, I decided to work with the confluence of references of a Colonial past shared by Portugal and Spain and the influence of the archive imagery in interpretation and speech. This series of works integrate a recent research based on experimentation and exploration of images related to archives and material available online from diverse sources with a special interest in Universal Exhibition Catalogues for their tendency on representing the colonized territories based on stereotypes and exotism. These representations are often manipulated for the entertainment of the occidental spectator. These studies focus on the exploration of image, memory and the intervention of fiction in the construction of narratives and manipulation of stories. The works from this series were presented recently at Instituto Cervantes in the context of the Photo España in Madrid and are displayed as an installation of prints, artist book and a video installation.
